Pre-order Middle-Earth: Shadow of War – Out Tuesday 22nd August 2017

In late February, perhaps sooner than intended, Warner Bros announced a long-awaited sequel to 2014’s Middle-earth Shadow of Mordor – the aptly titled, Middle-earth: Shadow of War. The game is due to be released August 22nd, 2017 so we’re to help you find out where to pre-order Shadow of War cheapest and get the best version.

As you might expect from the follow-up to 2014’s generally wonderfully-received Shadow of Mordor, this game has some big boots to fill. Its predecessor introduced video game players to a brand new concept in the form of the game’s Nemesis System – a family tree-esque list of enemy generals and underlings who must be identified and removed (whether through murder or coercion) in order for your mission to be complete.

This system, along with some frenetic gameplay and savage combat encounters, made the game a standout hit for the year and fans have been wondering for years when they would finally see a sequel. Now that Shadow of War is public knowledge, we have mere months to wait before we can collectively get our hands on it and dive right back into the Tolkien-influenced story.

While details are thin on the ground at the moment, what we do know from the announcement trailer is that the first game’s joint protagonists Talion and Celebrimbor will return. We’ll no doubt learn more about the game in the coming months, though, so stay tuned.

What we’re very well aware of, though, is the bizarre amount of different editions that will be available for this game. Namely, there’s the standard edition which will come with a pre-order bonus at launch, a Silver Edition, a Gold Edition and a Mithril Edition. That last one is a beast, by the way. Let’s take a closer look at what you’ll get with each edition.

Shadow of Mordor Xbox One PS4

Firstly, the Standard Edition comes with, as you’d expect, a copy of the game. Pre-order customers and anyone who picks the game up at launch, however, will receive the game’s ‘Pre-order bonus’ comprised of a download code for the Sword of Dominion in-game weapon and four legendary Orc champions to do battle with. Neat, right?

Shadow Gold and Silver

Next up, the Silver Edition, which features the pre-order bonus pack along with download codes for the Slaughter Tribe Nemesis Expansion, Outlaw Tribe Nemesis Expansion, and a Silver War Chest. What exactly is a War Chest? Right now, we have no idea but our bet is that it’s a chest full of randomised loot.

Then there’s the Gold Edition, which features everything in the Silver Edition along with the pre-order pack, then adds on a set of extra downloadable content. Namely, The Blade of Galadriel story expansion, The Desolation of Mordor story expansion, and a Gold War Chest. There’s that War Chest stuff again.

Nemesis Expansions, for the record, will each include “a new Orc tribe with new enemies, followers, missions, abilities, weapons, Fortress and wilderness updates, and a Mythic gear set.” Story expansions introduce a new campaign, new playable characters and abilities, side missions, enemies, and allies. So there’s that, too.

mithril edition

Then, if all of the above editions just aren’t enough for you, we have the Mithril Edition. This one is massive and has a price tag to fit it’s size. If you’re a die-hard Shadow of Mordor or Lord of the Rings fan, though, this one might be worth a look.

Here’s what you get – the full Gold Edition of the game and pre-order bonus pack, along with a premium case, a magnetic Ring of Power, an exclusive Mithril War Chest, the official soundtrack on disc, a cloth map of Mordor, a collection of exclusive Lithographs, and a tribes sticker pack. That’s all the small stuff, though, since the biggest part of this special edition is the limited edition, 12″ Tar-Goroth Balrog vs. Carnan Drake statue, pictured here. This one isn’t cheap but it sure is pretty.

So that’s a brief look at each of the editions on offer, now once you’ve figured out which version you want to pick up, here’s where you can pre-order Middle-earth: Shadow of War cheapest.
