Pre-order Prey – Out Friday 5th May 2017

The slick-looking outer space horror game that is Prey is finally due to release on Friday 5th May and if you’re not excited about it yet, you should be. Taking cues from legendary games such as the Bioshock series, this atmospheric horror shooter looks set to impress. Here are the best pre-order prices for Prey right now.

Prey is a game that I never thought would see the light of day. Originally announced as ‘Prey 2’ all the way back in 2006 before being cancelled unceremoniously in 2014, at the time it looked as though all hope was lost for the franchise. That all changed, however, in 2016 when Bethesda announced that it will, in fact, be releasing a brand new game in the Prey franchise but instead of the sequel that was originally shown, the game was to be a reboot.

From its initial announcement trailer, it’s clear that Prey had a lot of ambition. Developed by Arkane Studios – the folks behind the Dishonored series – has created a moody, atmospheric and unsettling horror game as the basis for its unique gameplay that combines Bioshock-esque first-person shooter sequences and dialogue-heavy narrative. Players are placed into the role of Morgan Yu, the subject of various experiments designed to improve the human race.  In this role, players are tasked with dealing with a sudden outbreak of a mysterious alien substance. Yu’s gender is decided by the player, a decision which will prove to be the first of many throughout the game’s story.

Yu’s gender is decided by the player, a decision which will prove to be the first of many throughout the game’s story. Each decision the player makes alters the story in some way, for better or worse. Through exploration of the vast and winding space station, Yu discovers that there are yet unseen horrors lurking in the shadows and must find a way to fend them off and uncover the truth behind the mystery. Even stranger still, while attempting to survive the onslaught, Yu begins to gain special powers from the aliens he defeats.

The game is reported to have multiple endings, too, depending on how players interacted with survivors and the space station as a whole through the course of the story. Overall the game looks moody, tense, and a little bit brilliant. There are lots of Bioshock vibes to be felt from the trailers that have been released from the game so far and if you’re especially curious, Johnny and Aoife from Eurogamer went and played the first hour of the game on video for you to check out.

For the most part, so far at least, all editions of Prey are the same from every retailer – each coming with the market-wide Pre-order bonus of “Morgan Yu’s family heirloom Margrave shotgun and tools to fight threats aboard Talos I including three Neuromods players can spend to acquire new abilities, two Medkits, a Fabrication plan to create the Shotgun and Ammo, a starter kit for building tools and weapons, and a unique upgrade to help players preserve their limited resources”. That’s what Bethesda has to say about it, at least.

Prey Steelbook

The only other edition of note is found at GAME in the UK, where customers are able to pre-order an exclusive edition that contains the game, pre-order bonus, a steelbook case and a soundtrack CD, all for a minor price bump above the regular price. Whether or not you want this edition is down to how much you really enjoy having physical editions of games and fancy boxes on your shelf.
