8bitdo

8bitdo’s wireless Nintendo throwback controllers now work with Nintendo Switch

Thanks to a Firmware update posted onto the official 8bitdo website yesterday, the company’s range of Bluetooth controllers designed to replicate the NES, SNES and other custom pads are now fully compatible with the Nintendo Switch console. Perfect for when the virtual console finally arrives. Here’s where you can get one.

For those of you who are not familiar with 8bitdo’s range of wireless gaming controllers, the images should tell you almost everything you need to know. The company specialises in creating wireless Bluetooth gaming controllers designed to replicate classic Nintendo controllers down to the tiniest details. The look, the weight and the overall feel are almost perfectly emulated in each of the 8bitdo controllers on offer unless of course, you decide to go for one of the more advanced NES versions that include thumbsticks.

Whichever version of the controller you choose, 8bitdo controllers are compatible across iOS, Android, Windows, Mac and of course, now the Nintendo Switch. While Nintendo’s Switch-based virtual console isn’t available right now, these controllers will be some of the best ways to play classic NES, SNES, N64 and other games on the system. They will work when your Switch is docked or when it’s in portable mode, too, as an added bonus.

The company also sells a Bluetooth ‘Retro Receiver’ which enables players to use the 8bitdo wireless controllers with existing consoles (including the Nintendo Classic Mini) and devices that do not utilise Bluetooth normally.

As Bluetooth devices, these things are incredibly simple to set up and go. If your device is Bluetooth-enabled, you just have to pair the controller and you’re off. Since the Nintendo Switch just happens to use Bluetooth for controllers, all 8bitdo had to do was update the firmware on the existing controllers to react to the Switch’s pairing and the majority of the company’s products work instantly. If you already own one of these pads, get your firmware updated here.
